The German Suit System

I think this is the richest suit system. Not only in Germany cards are found with the suits heart , bell , leaf , and acorn , but also in Austria and in several countries of the former double monarchy such as Hungary, Czeck Republic and South Tyrol. Even in Russia and the Ukraine they used to print cards with these suit symbols.

These traditional card patterns with German suits are still in use today:

  • The Prussia Pattern
  • The Saxon Pattern
  • The Bavaria Pattern
  • The Salzburg Pattern
  • The Prague Pattern
  • The Wurttemberg Pattern
  • The Franconia Pattern
  • The Tell or Seasons Pattern
  • Das GDR Pattern (German)

    • However, the Lviv pattern from the Ukraine is obsolete.
    "Львів" (Lviv) is located in western Ukraine.
